Sri Lanka unveil determined 15-member squad for ICC World Cup 2023 amidst captaincy speculations and injury concerns as Hasaranga and Theekshana doubtful
Sri Lanka (SL) have officially unveiled their 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, set to take place in cricket's sacred land, India. Amidst the turbulent tides of injury setbacks plaguing some of their key players, the island nation has managed to cobble together a squad that is poised to make its mark on the grandest stage of them all.
Dispelling swirling speculations and doubts, Dasun Shanaka stands resolute as he assumes the mantle of captaincy, leading the Sri Lankan contingent into the marquee event.
However, the air is not entirely clear, with lingering concerns surrounding the fitness of Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dilshan Madhushanka. The Sri Lankan management has shed light on this matter, emphasizing that their participation hinges on their physical condition.
Hasaranga grapples with a significant grade three hamstring tear, Theekshana contends with a stubborn Grade 2 hamstring injury, while Madhushanka has been grappling with a torn oblique muscle sustained during practice.
In anticipation of any unforeseen contingencies, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has thoughtfully named two reserves to accompany the squad to the 2023 World Cup. Dushan Hemantha, whose last ODI appearance was against India at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 17, and Chamika Karunaratne, last seen in action against New Zealand on March 31, 2023, in Hamilton, are entrusted with the crucial role of providing backup. Dushmantha Chameera has replaced Lahiru Kumara for Sri Lanka information in the Lanka squad in the latest development.
Sri Lanka's arduous World Cup journey
Sri Lanka's journey to the World Cup has been no walk in the park. The team had to navigate the challenging waters of World Cup qualifiers to secure its coveted berth in the marquee event. Alongside the Netherlands, Sri Lanka emerged triumphant in the qualifier final in Harare, earning their ticket to India. The Sri Lankan Lions will roar into action as they kickstart their World Cup campaign against South Africa at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 7.
