'They are not reckless, they just have a lot of shots' - SRH coach Daniel Vettori backs Travishek to excel
Travis Head has blown hot and cold in IPL 2025, while Abhishek Sharma didn't have too many runs under his belt before the record-shattering century in the last game against Punjab Kings.
Head coach Daniel Vettori shared a detailed assessment of Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) batting performance, especially from their dynamic opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Head has blown hot and cold in IPL 2025, while Abhishek didn't have too many runs under his belt before the record-shattering century in the last game against Punjab Kings. Both players have been described as reckless batters by some because they have played some rash shots to get out in the season so far. However, Vettori said that because they are ultra-aggressive batters, whenever they get dismissed, people feel that they are reckless.
"When we have been successful in the PowerPlay, Abhi and Travis have just been able to play their shots and deal with any ball on merit. Because there is a reputation of aggressive play and all-out attack, when the dismissals do come, people surmise that it could be slightly reckless, but that’s not the way I view it,” Vettori said ahead of SRH’s clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday, April 17.
Abhishek and Head added 171 runs for the first wicket in SRH's record-breaking run-chase against Punjab Kings in their last game. While the Australian batter made a 37-ball 66, his opening partner amassed 141 off just 55 deliveries as SRH chased down a 246-run target with eight wickets and nine balls to spare. This helped the former champions end their four-match losing streak.
Vettori asserted that both the left-handed batters put in a lot of hard work behind the scenes and try their best to assess the conditions and the opposition bowlers. The former New Zealand captain said that bowlers need to be given credit sometimes.
“Bowlers are allowed to bowl well, and you can’t succeed all the time. But I know how much thought Abby and Travis put into their batting and how much they assess conditions, how much they assess bowlers. And they know that when the ball’s there, they obviously want to hit it. But at no stage do I feel like they are being reckless or anything like that. They are just very good players who have a lot of shots,” Vettori mentioned.
