Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squared off in the 47th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday, May 4. KKR skipper Nitish Rana won the toss and decided to bat first. Jason Roy replaced David Wiese in the KKR playing eleven while the Aiden Markram-led side brought back Kartik Tyagi into the mix.

Marco Jansen provided a massive breakthrough for SRH in the very second over, dismissing opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck. The Afghan wicketkeeper-batter tried to take on the very first ball but could not time the shot well as Harry Brook completed a brilliant catch.

Jansen struck again as he dismissed Venkatesh Iyer for just seven runs in the same over. Iyer pulled the delivery but could not judge the bounce as it went straight to Heinrich Klaasen behind the stumps.

KKR suffered a loss against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in their previous match. Despite losing the game, Gurbaz was crucial for KKR, scoring 81 off 39 deliveries. His fifty was also the highest individual score by an Afghan batter in the IPL's history.

SRH, on the other hand, registered a thrilling win over Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 29 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi in their previous encounter. Abhishek Sharma and Klaasen scored half-centuries as SRH set a 198-run target for the hosts. SRH bowlers were instrumental during Delhi's chase as they restricted the David Warner-led side by 188/6 in 20 overs, with Mayank Markande picking two wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Akeal Hosein, T Natarajan, and Abhishek Sharma each scalping one.

In the first match between both teams in the ongoing IPL, SRH defeated KKR by 23 runs. With six points, the Aiden Markram-led side was currently eighth in the IPL 2023 points table, having won only three of their eight matches. KKR, on the other side, also have six points and are placed eighth in the rankings.
