Star Australia batter Steve Smith has been putting in a lot of work ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against team India. However, his preparation does not seem to be going with his plan after a second consecutive poor outing in the Sheffield Shield encounter against Victoria.

After scoring just three runs in the first innings of the game, Smith was sent packing for a duck in the second innings. The veteran batter was trapped LBW (Leg before wicket dismissal) by Australia’s Scott Boland. It is worth noting that New South Wales were handed a target of 383 runs in the fourth innings after Victoria put in a good showing with the bat, making the most of the lead that they put on. After the dismissal in the third over of NSW’s innings, Smith came out to bat but was unable to make a big impact.

In the fifth over of the innings, Steve Smith attempted to leave a delivery. However, the ball came back in and the batter was dismissed. Left in disbelief, Smith departed as NSW were left on a score of 20/2.

I think Steve had expressed a desire to move back down: George Bailey

Amidst the ongoing Sheffield Shield clashes, there have been many discussions over Steve Smith’s batting position for Australia in the upcoming BGT 2024-25. It is worth noting that ever since David Warner’s retirement, Smith has been batting as an opener for the Aussies.

However, there have been talks of moving down the order once more, starting with the upcoming series against India. Talking of the same, CA’s chief selector, George Bailey, came forward and revealed that Smith has expressed his wish to bat in the middle order.

"I think Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position. Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back the order for the summer. So, yeah, clearly we've got a No. 4 spot to fill and an opening spot to fill," Bailey was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
