Steve Smith was certainly disappointed when he got out and made it known in the dressing room: Michael di Venuto

Despite a decent start, Australia were completely bamboozled by India in the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Spin wizard Ravindra Jadeja picked up seven wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed three batters in the second innings.

It completely destroyed Australia’s batting unit and courtesy of the same, the Pat Cummins-led could post only 113 runs on board in their second outing with the bat. India had their own troubles but eventually won the match by six wickets.

Now interestingly, it was noted that a lot of Australian batters were dismissed while playing the sweep shot in the second innings. Former captain Steve Smith is one of those, who tried to play an uncharacteristic shot without taking his front foot away from the line of the ball and threw away his wicket rather cheaply. However, his teammates didn’t learn from it at all and many attempted the same and perished.

After another lacklustre performance from Australia, batting coach Michael di Venuto revealed Steve Smth’s outburst in the dressing room following his dismissal. Venuto mentioned that he hasn’t spoken to the cricketer yet but everyone in the dressing room was made aware of his frustrations.

“I haven't spoken to him yet about that, and where he's at. But he's excited about these conditions, he loves these conditions. It will be a frustrating thing for him at the moment that he hasn't had the impact he would have liked.

He was certainly disappointed when he got out, and he made it known in the dressing room it was a poor shot. I think most people would have heard that, so they should have had a fair idea of what not to do,” said Venuto as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

People weren't trusting their defence so started trying to sweep: Venuto

Venuto believes that Usman Khawaja was successful in the first innings because the opener wasn’t using it as a form of defence. He mentioned that the other cricketers were not trusting their defence and that’s the reason why they started to sweep and eventually lost their wickets. He also stated that it is the wrong mentality and it needs to change.

“Uz (Usman Khawaja) played beautifully in the first innings and has through Pakistan and the subcontinent. It (sweeping) is part of his game, but he also picks the balls to do it."

“It's smart, he's not using it as a form of defence and I think that's what happened towards the back end (of Australia's second innings). People weren't trusting their defence so started trying to sweep, which is the wrong way to go about it,” Venuto added.
