The Australian cricket team might be known for their great pacers, but there have been some incredible spinners within their ranks as well. Apart from the likes of Shane Warne and Nathan Lyon, another spinner who had shown a lot of ability and promise was Stuart MacGill, whose career unfortunately came to an end due to a lot of injuries.

Though MacGill retired in 2008, it seems like the problems are not ending for the 54-year-old as it has been brought to the people's attention that MacGill was charged and arrested for taking part in a drug deal under his restaurant in Sydney’s North Shore but had denied knowing that the deal had taken place. Though the Sydney District Court had acquitted him in 2021, it turns out the jury had heard the illicit exchange of $330,000 for a kilogram of the substance that was being sold at the time.

It was also revealed that his brother-in-law Marino Sotiropoulos was also involved in the deal. The prosecutors also argued that the deal would not have been possible at all without the former cricketer’s prior involvement, which was enough to find him guilty on the charge of drug supply. Overall, this is another dark phase in MacGill’s life.

MacGill’s cricketing career

Speaking of MacGill’s international career, he has played 44 Test matches and three ODI matches for Australia. He has taken 208 wickets in the red ball format at an average of 29.02. He has taken 12 five-wicket hauls. Apart from that, he has 774 wickets in first-class cricket and 193 wickets in List-A cricket.

His best performance was in the 1998/99 Ashes, where he was the highest wicket-taker in the series, taking 27 wickets in the eight innings he played. The series was won 3-1 by Australia under the leadership of Mark Taylor. The last Test at Sydney was the best game of his career, where he ended with 12 wickets in the game, taking 5/57 in the first innings and 7/50 in the second innings. He was adjudged the player of the match as well.
