‘I'm a little disappointed’ - Sunil Gavaskar's cheeky 'reverse-scoop' dig at Joe Root after his 31st Test century

Former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar stole the show with a tongue-in-cheek dig at star England batter Joe Root after the latter completed his century against India on Day 2 of the ongoing fourth Test in Ranchi. 
Playing in an uncharacteristic style as compared to England's modern approach in the longest format, Root showed a blend of grit and resilience and scored an unbeaten 122 off 274 as the visitors managed 353 in their first innings. 

Gavaskar termed Root's knock a proper Test innings but took a cheeky poke, stating that he wanted to see the veteran batter play a reverse-scoop to get to his ton.

"Yes, superb innings. It was a proper Test match innings. Old-fashioned Test match innings, you would say," Gavaskar said on commentary. "But I have got to say, I am a little disappointed. I am a disappointed man because I really wanted him to play a scoop shot to get to his hundred, that reverse-scoop. Get to 99, play the reverse-scoop, and then play the hundred, and then the crowd goes 'Rooooot'. Particularly the box on our right (England comm box)," he added.

India trail by 134 runs as Day 2 concludes

Speaking of the ongoing fourth Test between India and England, the first day of the clash concluded with England scoring 302 runs at the loss of seven wickets. The side resumed their innings on the second day but Ravindra Jadeja took 3 quick wickets to dismiss them for 353.

In response, the Indian team put forth an under-par performance with the bat. Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings with 73 runs in 117 deliveries but the remaining batters couldn't do much. Shubman Gill (38), Rajat Patidar (17) and Sarfaraz Khan (14) got starts but failed to convert. India finished the second day at 219/7 with Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav batting. The hosts trail by 134 runs as Day 3 of the Ranchi Test draws near.
