Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Gul slammed pacer Mohammad Amir, saying the latter should hold himself responsible pointing out his decision to call time on his career. Notably, Amir announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020 after claiming that the then-team administration "mentally tortured" him. The 31-year-old has played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 50 T20Is for Pakistan.

Gul said that he was dumbfounded when Amir announced his retirement from international cricket. According to the 40-year-old, it is not uncommon for players to experience difficulties when their performance falls short. He added that you can't always blame a particular coach or factor for being dropped and that he should own up for his actions.

"I was surprised when he (Amir) took retirement from international cricket. It's not uncommon for players to face challenges when their performance falls short. However, it's important to remember that you can't always pinpoint a specific coach or factor as the sole reason for being dropped. Instead, it's better to hold yourself accountable and take responsibility," Gul was quoted as saying by The News.

When you place the blame on yourself, it becomes an opportunity for growth: Gul

The former speedster went on to say that when someone blames oneself, it creates an opportunity for their progress. He added that accepting these kinds of challenges improves a player's performance.

"When you place the blame on yourself, it becomes an opportunity for growth. You strive to improve even more, motivated by the challenge of performing better alongside coaches and teammates who are excelling and expecting more from you. Embracing these challenges ultimately enhances your performance," he added.

Even if Amir reconsiders his retirement, according to Gul, it would be very challenging for him to return to the national team given the number of pacers Pakistan currently possesses.

"Honestly, if you talk about Hassan Ali or Mohammad Hasnain, when they are not able to secure their place in the team, even if Amir decides to come out of retirement, who would you bench for Amir?" he questioned.
