Australian batting perished against India in the first session on Day three of the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Resuming their innings on 61/1 after 12 overs, Australia faltered against the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as they were bundled out for 113 in the second innings.
The Aussie batters suffered a dramatic collapse as they slipped from 85/2 to 113 all out. Six of the last eight Australian wickets fell to Ravindra Jadeja who bowled his best-ever spell in a Test innings of his career. He finished with figures of 7/42 in 12.1 overs as six Australian batters lost their wicket either sweeping or reverse sweeping against the Indian spinners.
Indian batters chased down the target of 115 with six wickets in hand and went 2-0 up in the four-match Test series. Following India’s emphatic win, Jadeja had a piece of advice for the Australian batters while facing him on the Delhi wicket.
“Don't think a sweep is a good option against me on this kind of wicket," Ravindra Jadeja said in the post-match presentation.
'I think I was enjoying my bowling, these wickets suit me' - Ravindra Jadeja
Furthermore, Ravindra Jadeja revealed his gameplan against the Aussies. "I think I was enjoying my bowling. These wickets suit me because the odd ball spins and some stay low. I knew they'd play sweeps and reverse sweeps, so my idea was just keeping it simple and straight. I knew they were looking for runs, so the plan was just bowling into the stumps. If they make a mistake, I have a chance," he added.
Other than Jadeja, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was also heavily critical of Australia’s batting approach against Jadeja. He said that sweeping is not a good option against someone like Jadeja who can bowl flat, fast and accurately. Kaif took to Twitter after Australia were all out and wrote, “Even a club cricketer in Delhi will warn you against sweeping at Kotla. That too against Jadeja who can bowl flat, fast and accurate. 7 wickets, no rough from his end, Jadeja is a champion all-rounder. @imjadeja.”
With this win, India are one step closer to sealing their place in the final of the World Test Championship. They just need to win one more Test and their place in the final will be secured.
