T20 World Cup 2022: Updated Points table after ENG vs SL game
New Zealand and England from group 1 have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.
England emerged victorious against Sri Lanka in their do-or-die game and with that, qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022. The team on Saturday, November 5 defeated the Asian champions by four wickets to topple the defending champions Australia and move on to the next round of the multi-nation competition.
The Three Lions now joined the New Zealand team and will face the league leaders of Group 2. They are just behind the Blackcaps on the Net Run Rate (NRR) which also ruled Australia out of the competition. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka with a loss on Saturday finished fourth on the table with four points while Ireland finished fifth in the table with three points and Afghanistan finished at the bottom of the table with just two points to their name.
The defending champions and Asian champions are now knocked out
With Australia’s win over Afghanistan on Friday, Sri Lanka were already out of the competition but wanted to finish on a higher note. Deciding to bat first against England, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis gave the team a flying start but their middle order however failed to put up a match-winning show. The team put 141 runs on board after 20 overs as the English batters did face problems but chased it down eventually.
Captain Jos Buttler and Alex Hales gave England the start they needed and despite some turbulence in the middle overs, the England team chased the total down with just two balls to spare. Australia are ruled out of the competition as they have a weaker NRR than that of England with same seven points.
The Aaron Finch-led side lost their very first match against New Zealand by a massive margin and that eventually cost them in the tournament. Their match against England was called off because of rain and that too played a part in their elimination as a win over the former champions could have kept them alive. Nonetheless, Group 1 lived up to its potential and indeed proved to the group of death.
