The Kiwis thrashed Asian champions, Sri Lanka, by 65 runs to register a big win and have made a big statement among the other teams in Group 1 of the T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 stages. Glenn Phillips led the comeback for New Zealand with a stunning century while Trent Boult bowled an extraordinary spell to end up with four wickets.

New Zealand batted first after winning the toss and the Kiwis did stumble a bit upfront with the top three batters dismissed quickly. However, Glenn Phillips put on a show with the bat and single-handedly set up a great platform for his side after Daryl Mitchell provided good support with a 24-ball 22. Sri Lanka failed to step on the accelerator despite picking up the early wickets and it backfired hugely.

Phillips went past the fifty-run mark comfortably and kept finding the boundaries from one side while the non-striker was happy to give him the strike. The prolific right-hander sensed a century was on the cards and reached it by clearing the ropes consistently. Phillips' second T20I century ensured that the Kiwis got to 167 for 7 in their 20 overs.

In reply, the Sri Lankan batters never got going in the run chase and kept losing wickets which did not help them at all. Trent Boult went through an amazing spell and the Island nation was stranded with their run rate not moving up. Bhanuka Rajapaksa did provide some fireworks however, his 22-ball 34 was short-lived and Dasun Shanaka’s efforts in the end weren’t enough to take Sri Lanka home.

New Zealand tighten grip at the top of Group 1 Points Table

New Zealand have strengthened their position at the top of the Group 1 points table and have moved to five points from three games with the best net run rate in the group. The washed-out game against Afghanistan did cost them a point, however, they look strong to make it to the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka are stuck at two points with one win in three games. They will need to win their remaining two games. However, their chances of making the semi-finals don’t look promising after the loss. Their net run-rate has taken a toll after the hammering against New Zealand and they have moved to the bottom of the points table.
