T20 World Cup 2022: Virender Sehwag predicts Babar Azam to finish as leading run scorer

The much-awaited Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 is all set to kick off on October 22, with defending champions Australia taking on previous year’s finalists New Zealand in the first match, followed by the second contest of the day between England and Afghanistan. With the Super 12 approaching, former cricketers and pundits have started picking their favorites in the tournament.

For some teams, there are multiple in-form players, and the teams would surely hope for those specific players to do well on the big stage too. As for Pakistan, top-order batters Mohammad Rizwan and skipper Babar Azam are in good touch with the bat.

Feels great to watch Babar bat: Sehwag

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan will lock horns with the Rohit Sharma-led India, to begin their campaign at the T20 World Cup 2022, on Sunday, October 23, at the MCG. The Pakistani side has been facing problems with their middle-order lineup currently, and it has often been seen that top-order batters score a majority of runs.

When asked about his pick of the top run-getter, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag said that Babar Azam will end up as the leading run-scorer of the tournament.

“Pakistan's Babar Azam. He is batting brilliantly. Feels great to watch him bat, just like you feel at peace while seeing Virat Kohli's batting. You feel happy watching Babar Azam bat,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Virender Sehwag's prophecies usually turn out to be true. Recently, David Warner recollected how Sehwag was one of the first to recognize his talent in the game's longest format. Warner admitted that he was taken aback when Sehwag told him that he would make a strong Test player, after playing under Sehwag's leadership in the IPL.

“When I went to Delhi, Sehwag watched me a couple of times and said to me, 'you'll be a better Test cricketer than what you will be a T20 player'. I basically looked at him and said, 'mate, I haven't even played a first-class game yet'. But he said, 'all the fielders are around the bat, if the ball is there in your zone you're still going to hit it. You're going to have ample opportunity to score runs. You've always got to respect the good ball, but you've always got to punish the ball you always punish',” Warner had said.
