India and Pakistan finished in the top two positions in the Super 12 Group 2 table to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final round. India, South Africa, Pakistan, and Bangladesh were competing for the semi-final spot before going into their final group stage fixture on Sunday (November 6).
New Zealand beat Ireland to become the first team to secure their place in the semi-final round. Australia registered a crucial win against Afghanistan in their last Super 12 Group 1 fixture to remain in the race for the semi-final round but England's win against Sri Lanka on Saturday ended the hosts' World Cup campaign.
New Zealand topped the Group 1 with seven points and England had to settle for a second spot with the same points but comparatively low net run rate.
India and Pakistan progress to semi-final from Group 2:
South Africa were placed in the second position with five points before the Netherlands game and needed a win to top the group. But they suffered a shocking defeating by 13 runs which ended their World Cup journey immediately. Pakistan and Bangladesh then played a crucial game to win the qualification for the semi-final round where the former secured an easy five-wicket win to top the group with six points.
India needed a win or a point to top the Group 2 before going into the their last group-stage fixture. Suryakumar Yadav smashed unbeaten 61 runs to help India score 186/5 while batting first and then Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets to bowl out Zimbabwe on just 115 runs.
Pakistan will be facing Group 1 leaders New Zealand in the first semi-final clash at Sydney Cricket Ground on November 9. Group 2 toppers India will clash against England in the second semi-final clash at Adelaide Oval on November 10 and a winner from both the fixture will play the final at Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 13.
