Team India are all set to lock horns with Pakistan in the most debated Match 19 of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, the high-octane game was scheduled to be played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, on (Sunday) June 9.
Speaking of the Blue Brigade, they started strongly against Ireland in their tournament opener and will look to continue their winning momentum against the Green Shirts. On the contrary, Pakistan are crestfallen having suffered a massive upset at the hands of the United States of America (USA) last week, who are also the co-hosts of the T20 World Cup 2024 edition. Hence it is almost a do-or-die situation for them.
Besides, the playing conditions have also become a burning question given that the archrivals do not play regularly and hence fans often wait for the 'mother of all rivalry' to take place after a long time. This essentially means that apart from the pitch and other factors, the weather has been one of the most talked about factors. Notably on many occasions weather has played possums in the ongoing mega ICC event.
Speaking of New York's weather conditions, a nearly 61 per cent chance of rain has been forecasted for the city with time estimated at 10 AM local time. As a result, there are high chances of the game getting interrupted given the estimated time as per Accuweather is just half an hour before the scheduled time for the game's start time. Apart from rain, post-11 AM, thunderstorms are on the cards which can surely pose a washout situation thereby disappointing fans and the cricket fraternity alike.
Now speaking of the pitch conditions, in the last few games of the ongoing T20 World Cup, the New York pitch played in a quite bizarre and unpredictable manner. Moreover, it looked quite dangerous especially when India played against Ireland. However, as per Ravi Shastri, the Canada versus Ireland match had a sporting wicket where both the batter and bowlers got equal chances to play their roles. Hence the wicket got better and interestingly, the ICC had earlier said that their team has been working on getting the drop-in pitch to play better in the coming days ahead.
What will happen if India vs Pakistan is washed out?
Hence, in totality, rain threats are looming over the T20 World Cup 2024 fixture, which culminates into the biggest question of what will be the impact on qualification scenarios for both India and Pakistan if the game ends in a complete washout on Sunday.
To get straight to the point, if a washout happens, there is no reserve day allotted for group stage games or even the upcoming matches which will be played under the Super Eight round. However, all is not lost given that there is a piece of slightly bright news for the fans. That news is that 90 minutes aka one and a half hours time is allotted for the extension of the play if rain plays villain in the India versus Pakistan game in New York.
Furthermore, if there is a total washout and the game officially ends in a 'No Result,' then both the Asian sides will share a point each between them. Consequently, Team India will then move up to three points while Pakistan will open their account in the T20 World Cup.
Besides, when it comes to Reserve days, the apex cricket governing body ICC (International Cricket Council) has provided only the first Semifinal the luxury of a reserve day which is slated to take place on June 26 in Trinidad. Notably, an extra hour will be given first to complete the game on the same day. However, if it fails to happen, then another 190 minutes will be given on the reserve day to decide the outcome of the game.
For the second Semifinal, instead of a reserve day, the ICC has allotted an extra timeline of 250 minutes to complete a weather-affected game. Notably, the second knockout will be played on June 27 in Guyana. Meanwhile, the grand final of the T20 World Cup 2024 will be played on June 29.
