Rashid Khan has been handed a penalty for breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the T20 World Cup 2024 game against Bangladesh on June 25. The Afghanistan captain was held for breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The Code of Conduct relates to throwing a ball or any other item of cricket prop at or in close quarters of a player in a way that can cause disrespect or danger during an international match.

While the leg-spinner has managed to avoid risking a game's ban, he has been handed over one demerit point. The frequency of the actions is less as this is the first offence of the cricketer in 24 months. The charges were leveled by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza. Rashid has breached the Level 1 category, which carries a maximum penalty of 50 percent match fees and one or two demerit points.

Rashid was batting with Karim Janat during Afghanistan’s innings in the last over. The spinner was refused a second run by Janat which left him livid and he struck his bat on the ground in frustration. After the incident, the right-arm spinner was reported to have admitted to the offence and acknowledged the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.
