Teams are still scrambling for spots in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, and there's extra motivation to clinch those spots: a place in the top eight guarantees direct qualification for the next T20 World Cup in 2026.

The next edition will feature 20 teams, with 12 automatically qualifying: the two co-hosts - India (who have already made the Super Eight) and Sri Lanka (who haven't) - as well as the other teams in the Super Eight in 2024 (excluding India), and the three highest-ranked teams outside of these on the ICC's T20I rankings as of June 30, 2024. That makes 12 teams. The remaining eight spots will be decided through regional qualifiers.

This means the USA, needing just one point from their ongoing game against Ireland in Lauderhill, could secure a spot in their second consecutive T20 World Cup. The weather has already caused a long delay, adding to the tension. Similarly, Scotland only need to get past Australia in Gros Islet, where the weather forecast looks clear. Afghanistan have already confirmed their spot for 2026, and the Netherlands are in a race with Bangladesh for the same, though the Bangla Tigers are the favourites.

For some Full Members, missing out on the Super 8s this year doesn't spell disaster. Sri Lanka automatically qualified as a co-host. England and Pakistan, should they lose out to Scotland and the USA respectively, will still qualify based on their ICC rankings. The same applies to New Zealand. Currently, England, New Zealand, and Pakistan are ranked Nos. 4, 6, and 7 respectively, well ahead of teams needing to rely on rankings. Depending on other results, Ireland, ranked No. 11, might also qualify via rankings.

The ICC's first qualifier tournament for the 2026 T20 World Cup, the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier, is set to begin tomorrow in Italy. Enthusiasm is at an all-time high as teams from across Europe compete fiercely for their spots in cricket’s premier T20 event. This tournament marks the start of a thrilling journey towards the 2026 World Cup, with each match carrying significant weight in determining who will advance to the global stage.
