Defending champions Australia will hope to become the first team to defend their T20 title
The eighth edition of the T20 World Cup is in the reckoning with 16 nations set to participate in the ICC showcase event, commencing in October. The tournament gets underway with Sri Lanka facing Namibia on October 16 and will conclude with the final on November 13, running nearly for a month.
Reigning champions Australia who won the previous edition of the tournament by defeating bitter rivals New Zealand in the final less than a year ago will defend their crown in front of their home crowd. The matches will take place across Australia at the MCG, The SCG, the Gabba, the Adelaide Oval, the Perth Stadium, the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, and Kardina Park in Geelong.
What is the format of the T20 World Cup 2022?
The highly anticipated tournament is divided into two stages. The first stage will feature eight teams: Namibia, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Zimbabwe, and West Indies. Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and West Indies were the ninth to twelfth ranked teams in the previous edition of the tournament, while the other four qualified after participating in the Global Qualifiers.
The eight teams are divided into two groups, and the winner and runner-up from each group move forward to the next group stage, joining the teams already qualified. They will join the top-ranked eight teams from the previous edition of the tournament in the Super 12 stage of the tournament.

When will the T20 World Cup start and end?
The curtain-raiser fixture of the T20 World Cup will be played between Namibia and the Asia Cup 2022 champions Sri Lanka on the 16th of October. While the tournament will be concluded with the showstopping finale on the 13th of November.

What is the venue-wise breakup of league matches?
The 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia will see 45 matches played across seven stadiums in the country. The Kardinia Park Stadium and the Bellerive Oval will exclusively host the Round 1 fixtures. While the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the final of the tournament along with the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan on the 23rd of October.

T20 World Cup Winners List
The first ever T20 World Cup edition was won by MS Dhoni-led India. Since then, apart from West Indies, no other team has won the tournament twice. Darren Sammy is the only captain to lead his side to the crown twice. Australia are the current holders having won the 2021 edition while Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka are the other winners.
