Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will be gearing up for the next challenge against West Indies for three-match ODI series. Team India will take this series as a preparation fixture for the 2023 ODI World Cup which is set to be hosted by India in October-November.
However, Team India will be highly motivated after their splendid performance in the Test series against the Caribbean side where they won the series 1–0. Virat Kohli scored his 29th Test century in the last game and the star Indian batter would be looking to carry the same momentum in the upcoming limited-over fixtures.
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra praised the Indian skipper for his records in the ODI format and picked him as the Indian side's first choice opener for ODI WC.
"Let's start with the captain. Take his name and the debate is over. The player's name is Rohit Sharma. Interestingly, he is not too far from the 10000-run mark. We have not celebrated him enough, which across the board is a mistake," said Chopra on his YouTube channel.
In the context of the above statement, Shubman Gill has been in tremendous form in limited-overs cricket. Gill holds the record of being the youngest cricketer to score a double century in ODIs. The 23-year-old is certainly the first-choice opening partner of Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format.
Meanwhile, the star Indian opener will be looking to repeat his last ODI World Cup's performances, where he scored five centuries from nine matches, although the Indian team were knocked out in the semifinal, this time they will be looking to touch the glory. Speaking further of Rohit, Chopra said:
"He is an absolute white-ball legend but he hasn't been the center of discussion or attraction. What was the reason for that? I am not going to go there at all but the truth is that Rohit Sharma is a runaway match-winner."
"In the last World Cup, he struck five centuries but despite that India did not win. So it was not his mistake, he scored a lot of runs and that too in England. So Rohit Sharma is the captain and opener, so he is definitely there," the former Indian cricketer concluded.
