This week gone by has been filled with controversies surrounding the reliability of Decision Review System (DRS) technology. Shadab Khan, skipper of Islamabad United, has sparked fresh debate by fiercely criticising the system after his team's defeat against Quetta Gladiators in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL). The match, which saw Gladiators secure a three-wicket victory over United, was marred by a pivotal DRS decision that left Shadab and his team visibly frustrated.
During the 11th over of Quetta Gladiators' innings, a contentious lbw appeal was raised against Gladiators' captain Rilee Rossouw off the bowling of Agha Salman. Initially given out by on-field umpire Aleem Dar, the decision was challenged by Gladiators, leading to a review. However, the ensuing DRS process stirred controversy as the ball-tracking technology displayed a trajectory inconsistent with the actual delivery bowled by Agha Salman.
Shadab Khan: "I think technology was at fault. A different ball was shown (on the ball tracker for the Rilee Rossouw review). These small mistakes shouldn't be happening in such a big tournament."#HBLPSL9 | #QGvIU pic.twitter.com/lc6eaYrKZD

These mistakes should not happen: Shadab Khan
Expressing his concerns, Shadab, condemned the DRS decision, emphasising the significance of such technological errors in high-stakes tournaments like the PSL.
"I think technology made a mistake. The ball-tracking showed a different delivery, and it was a match-changing moment. These sorts of things should be sorted out properly in such a big tournament. These mistakes should not happen. I bowled four overs here as a legspinner, and I don't think the ball was spinning here. And they showed Agha [Salman]'s delivery hitting outside off stump and spinning away. I don't buy that," Shadab voiced his frustration.
With the Gladiators chasing a modest total of 139 set by Islamabad United, the match hung in the balance. United, relying on their bowling strength, believed they could exploit Gladiators' vulnerable lower order. However, the DRS decision was in favor of Gladiators, who capitalised on it and secured a victory with an unbeaten partnership between Rossouw and Sherfane Rutherford.
Earlier this week there was another incident that took place in the third T20I between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan where the Sri Lankan skipper Wanindu Hasranga voiced his opinion on the incorrect umpire decision.
