Temba Bavuma pays visit to Johannesburg hospital to witness institution's efforts in fight against breast cancer

On February 27th, South African cricket captain Temba Bavuma visited the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital to see their efforts against breast cancer and the impact of the Pink ODI fund firsthand.

Bavuma was a guest of the hospital's Breast Cancer Clinic, which diagnoses over 350 fresh cases annually and treats roundabout 100 patients a week. The clinic has received support from the Pink ODI Fund since 2018. The Fund is generated through public donations during the popular Pink ODI cricket matches hosted at the Wanderers Stadium.

Since its inception in 2013, with 12 matches held so far, Pink ODIs have become synonymous with raising awareness about breast cancer. The substantial funds raised during these events have been channeled into The Pink ODI Fund, totalling R2.4 m for research and ward upgradations, alongside nearly R700,000 collected for various projects.

It’s about making a meaningful impact: Temba Bavuma 

Reflecting on his involvement, Bavuma said, "It’s about making a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by breast cancer and supporting the efforts of dedicated medical professionals to combat this disease. It was a privilege to witness the significance of the contribution made through the Pink ODI Fund. It’s an honour to be a part of this special initiative and raise awareness for something that goes beyond just cricket," as quoted by CSA's official website.

The CEO of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Gladys Bogoshi, expressed appreciation for the ongoing collaboration and co-operation by Cricket South Africa, Central Gauteng Lions, and all stakeholders involved in spreading awareness about breast cancer.

“Management and staff of CMJAH appreciate the collaboration with Cricket South Africa, Central Gauteng Lions, and all stakeholders for continuing to raise awareness about breast cancer on a global platform through Pink Day," she said.

“This partnership has assisted us in sending a message that prevention is better than cure; men can also develop breast cancer, and that you should continue self-assessment of your status. Seeking medical help early improves health outcomes, improves life expectancy, and reduces medical care costs," she added. 

She also highlighted how the Pink ODI Fund has helped improve patient care and outcomes. “We have managed to improve our patient care experience through this partnership, and we look forward to continued support from our nation’s cricketers and the cricket-loving public,” she concluded.

Bavuma's visit underscores the power of collective action in the fight against breast cancer. Through the support of Cricket South Africa, Central Gauteng Lions, and countless stakeholders, the Pink ODI Fund continues to shed light on breast cancer awareness while providing essential funding for its diagnosis and treatment.
