Former cricketer Virender Sehwag verbally attacked Shakib Al Hasan after the latter flopped in Bangladesh’s first couple of matches in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Sehwag advised him to retire from the shortest format of the game and also remarked that he is not Adam Gilchrist or Matthew Hayden and should play according to his standard.

Shakib responded to Sehwag’s comments after a match-winning knock against Netherlands. He made 64* runs off 46 deliveries which helped Bangladesh win by 25 runs and get closer to the Super 8 spot. After the knock, Shakib responded to the criticism by saying that he had nothing to answer to anyone but former Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes didn’t hold back and stated that legendary cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid know how to respect, unlike Sehwag.

“Shakib didn't become Shakib-Al-Hasan in 1 or 2 days. He is the No. 1 ICC all-rounder, not once but for a long time, and across formats. A player like him needs to be treated with respect, which Virender Sehwag didn't get in his career. So he probably knows nothing about respect or giving respect to others,” Kayes was quoted as saying by several Bangladesh media outlets.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh have four points to their name in three matches and should qualify for the Super 8. They will play Nepal in their final group stage game and a win in that match will seal the deal for them. In Super 8, the Najmul Shanto-led side can meet India, possibly on June 22 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Bangladesh have had a fantastic campaign so far in which they defeated Sri Lanka in the opening game of the competition but lost to South Africa in the next match. However, they bounced back against Netherlands and now if they keep up with the momentum, Bangladesh can be a dangerous side in the Super 8.
