'The aim should be to go out on a high' - Shahid Afridi suggests retirement for Virat Kohli while being on his peak
Virat Kohli finished the 2022 Asia Cup with 276 runs in just five matches.
Virat Kohli finally ended his international hundred drought with a sensational 122-run knock against Afghanistan in India's last match of the 2022 Asia Cup tournament on September 8. He remained unbeaten and took only 61 balls to score 122 runs while smashing his maiden T20I ton. He hit six sixes and maintained a strike rate of 200 to burry off his critics who questioned his slow approach in the recent T20I matches.
The cricketing fraternity is still talking about his century and many highlighted Kohli's knock as the best moment of the 2022 Asia Cup. Kohli, 33, remains the fittest player in Indian cricket and there is no pressure on him to retire from cricket in near future. But before the Asia Cup tournament, when he was struggling for the big knocks, many suggested that the former captain should retire from the shortest format of the game.
It shouldn’t reach a stage where you are dropped from the team: Shahid Afridi
Kohli has scored 3584 runs in just 96 T20I innings at an impressive average of 51.94 and a strike rate of 138.37 so far. He is only behind Rohit Sharma in the leading run-scores chart who has scored 3620 runs in 128 T20I innings. Kohli's resurgence to form has dismissed all the questions on his form and also on his early T20I retirement. The former Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi praised Kohli's extraordinary career and also shared some advice while talking in the show on Samaa TV on Tuesday. He stated that when times come Kohli should retire while he is at his best instead of getting dropped from the team.
“The way Virat has played, the start that he had to his career, there was struggle initially before he made a name for himself. He is a champion and I believe there comes a stage when you are headed towards retirement. But in that scenario, the aim should be to go out on a high," Shahid Afridi said on Samaa TV.
“It shouldn’t reach a stage where you are dropped from the team and instead when you are at your peak. It seldom happens though. Very few players, especially cricketers from Asia make that decision, but I feel when Virat does it, he will do it style and probably in the same manner in which he started his career," Afridi added.
