Sri Lanka skipper Wanindu Hasaranga blamed their batters after a disappointing loss at the hands of Bangladesh in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Batting first, the Lankan Lions lost two early wickets and were in trouble, but Pathum Nissanka held one end. The opener made 47 runs off 28 deliveries, but there was little support from the other end.

After his dismissal, Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva tried to stabilize Sri Lanka’s innings but failed to do so. Spinner Rishad Hossain waived his magic in the middle overs, which spoiled the day for Sri Lanka. He picked up a couple of quick wickets which forced Sri Lanka to collapse. They eventually posted 124 runs on the board, which wasn’t enough.

When it came to the chase, Bangladesh lost a couple of wickets but managed to find a grip on the game. Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy stitched a crucial partnership of 63 runs, which played a massive part in their win. Meanwhile, after the match, Hasaranga stated that the batters failed to capitalize in the middle overs, which cost them the game.

“We started well in the first 10 overs but in the middle overs, we batted badly. Bowling is our strength. If we had got 150-160, we could have won with our bowling attack. The batters let us down in both games. We still have two games, and we will try to do our best. Maheesh and I are the two main spinners, and we have to attack,” Hasaranga said in the post-match presentation.

Sri Lanka have two more matches left in the competition—one against Nepal on June 12 while the last is scheduled against the Netherlands on June 17. To qualify for the Super 8, the Lankan Lions need to win their remaining two matches, but that won’t guarantee a spot in the next round. Group D currently looks tight with South Africa, Netherlands and Bangladesh having two points each while Sri Lanka and Nepal are yet to open their tally.
