‘The danger period was New York, where they did quite well’ - Stephen Fleming on India's vulnerabilities in T20 World Cup

It’s been over 11 years since India last won an ICC tournament. They have come close on multiple occasions but fell short. They were the favourites to win the 2023 ODI World Cup at home but on the night of the finals, both batting and bowling unit suffered, resulting in a six-wicket defeat. Coming to the T20 World Cup 2024, India seem confident and they have played well but there are talks about vulnerabilities.

Virat Kohli is yet to find his feet while there are concerns regarding Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja’s form as well. Rinku Singh missing out on the 15-member squad made a lot of noise and Dube’s failure to step up accelerated it further. Despite all this, former cricketer Stephen Fleming believes that the Indian team shouldn’t be concerned. He added that the surface in New York offered challenges but the players are aware of the conditions in West Indies and expect them to get better in the Super 8.

He added that the Rohit Sharma-led side has all the bases covered and expects them to produce good performances in West Indies. He also mentioned that the players showed maturity in the New York leg and will have to continue with the same momentum.

“Not really and neither there should because there's so much talent really to pick from. The vulnerability would have come from New York where the ball is going to seam around and from the pace bowling point of view you have a little bit of uneven bounce but they dealt with that quite well,” Fleming said in ESPNcricinfo’s ‘Timeout’ show.

“The last game was I thought very mature the way they chased down the title, so they got through that and I would expect if conditions are playing in some of the key venues like we expect them to do then they should have all bases covered and I thought the danger period was really New York where we had no idea how it was going to play and then dealing with the challenges that were there they did that quite well. So I would expect this side and the talent they've got to get a little bit stronger,” the 51-year-old added.
