The T20 World Cup 2024 is looming on the horizon, and Australia will be led by star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. The board recently announced the 15-man squad that will be travelling to the West Indies and the USA for the marquee event.
Ahead of the tournament, Australia faces a setback as skipper Mitchell Marsh is currently injured. The star all-rounder last played a game for Delhi Capitals in the IPL on April 3. He is yet to make an appearance after that due to a hamstring strain.
He flew home from Delhi to Perth on April 12 for his initial recovery with Australian team physiotherapist Nick Jones. It was also confirmed by DC that Marsh would be missing the remainder of the IPL after the recovery process took longer than expected.
After being confirmed as Australia’s skipper, Mitchell Marsh came forward and reflected on how he is trying his best to be completely fit for the T20 World Cup, but did admit that even a minor setback could be unaffordable.
"The hammy is good, it's coming along really well, It's pretty much exactly where we want it to be. It's one of those things. Just got to get it right over the next three weeks and get on the plane. If we had to play tomorrow, I would be in a bit of trouble. Still a couple of weeks away, and the timing probably sits perfectly barring any setbacks,” Mitchell Marsh was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
I think we've got a really great squad: Marsh
It is due to the injury risk to Marsh that Australia went with Cameron Green in the squad. If something were to happen to all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, Australia would have to field a lineup without a pace-bowling option to bat in their top seven.
"Anytime there's a World Cup team picked, there's only 15 and some guys have to miss out, But I think we've got a really great squad that we've picked, we've got a lot of versatility, a lot of experience. And that brings a lot of excitement,” Marsh said.
