South Africa all-rounder Wayne Parnell has been appointed as the skipper of Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. The team was forced to release their skipper, Faf du Plessis, ahead of the next season due to his commitments with St. Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and thus, Parnell has been given the opportunity to lead the side.
Notably, the 33-year-old played only a couple of games for Superchargers in the 2022 season after he was brought in as a replacement player. In the 2023 edition, the team has decided to retain him and give him a bigger responsibility in the absence of his current skipper at Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Interestingly, Parnell led Pretoria Capitals to the final of the inaugural edition of SA20 and is currently leading Seattle Orcas in the ongoing Major League Cricket. Thus, he has the much-needed experience which can come in handy in the third edition of The Hundred.
Meanwhile, James Foster, the head coach of the Superchargers, expressed his delight to bring Parnell back into the squad. He mentioned that the cricketer is very well accustomed to the conditions, and his experience can prove to be vital.
“We are delighted to have Wayne back in the squad. He knows the team and, having played in this year's T20 Blast for Durham, he knows the conditions well. He brings with him a wealth of experience from his international and domestic career and that will be invaluable to the team,” Foster was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
On the other hand, Hollie Armitage will continue as the skipper of the women’s team of the Superchargers. Dani Hazell, the head coach of the women’s team confirmed the development and stated that the cricketer did a pretty good job in the last edition, and thus, they are happy to see her continue.
“Hollie did a great job last season and she has a lot of experience. She led the Northern Diamonds to their first title, winning the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, last year so she knows how to win,” Dani Hazell said.
