‘The timing of it is probably not ideal’ - Michael Hussey on Justin Langer’s emotional outburst
Australia will next play a two-match Test series against the West Indies at home.
Justin Langer’s resignation as the head coach of the Australian cricket team was one of the most shocking moments in the 2022 cricketing calendar. After Australia’s success in the T20 World Cup 2021 and in the last Ashes against England at home, a contract extension was on the cards but to Langer’s surprise, Cricket Australia only handed him a six-month extension after consulting Test skipper Pat Cummins.
Cummins wanted Australia to change their approach in Test cricket. After not getting the desired extension, Langer handed over his resignation and parted ways with the Australian team with immediate effect. The former Aussie international, however, was very furious with the players, and so much so, that he didn’t shy away from calling them ‘cowards’.
However, Langer recently clarified his remarks and stated to be on good terms with everyone in the team including skipper Pat Cummins. Talking recently on the BackChat podcast, Langer revealed that his relationship with the current crop of cricketers is absolutely fine and denied rumours of a potential rift.
However, Michael Hussey, Langer's former teammate pointed out the unnecessary distraction Langer can create with his recent comments. Hussey seems to be disappointed with Langer’s statement and believes that the timing of it is not ideal.
‘Maybe it could’ve been handled better from Cricket Australia perspective’ - Hussey
With Australia’s two-match Test series against the West Indies scheduled to begin on November 30, Hussey believes that Langer’s comment could hamper the team’s preparation ahead of the upcoming series. The 47-year-old also mentioned that Cricket Australia could have handled the situation in a much better way.
“The timing of it (Langer's statement) is probably not ideal. (Langer’s) obviously still upset about how it all went down, and maybe it could’ve been handled better from a Cricket Australia perspective," Hussey told foxsports.com.au.
“My sense is the players have been pretty quiet on it all. They’ve sorted and moved on, they just want to move on. There’s no point making it a distraction for them. They can’t afford to make that a distraction for them. They’re going to get asked about it but they’re just going to have to focus on their preparation for the Test,” he added.
