'There seemed a sense of complacency, ruthlessness was missing' - Aakash Chopra on India's bowling in ODI series versus Sri Lanka

Aakash Chopra questioned India's bowling efforts during their ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The Men in Blue lost a bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years.

India captain Rohit Sharma was asked at the post-match presentation whether his side were complacent against the fairly inexperienced Sri Lankan side. However, the highest run-getter in the series rubbished the claim. Chopra, however, opined that India's bowling unit seemed complacent and lacked ruthlessness.

"We weren't able to close out the innings with the ball. There seemed a sense of complacency that we would get the wickets anyway and if we don't get the wickets we will chase the runs anyway. The ruthlessness was missing," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

The Indian team has come under the cosh after their series defeat which has shocked many in the cricket fraternity. The No. 1 ODI team was almost at full-strength against an injury-ridden Sri Lankan side. However, the Island Nation showed great determination and resilience to muster a memorable 2-0 series win.

Chopra expected Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel to wreak havoc in the spin-friendly conditions but that wasn't to be. In fact, India failed to bowl out Sri Lanka even once in the series.

The cricketer-turned-commentator said that Indian batters play spin well on flat tracks and the bowlers also bowl better than their counterparts. However, on turning tracks, Chopra noted that the batting comes a cropper and the gap in the bowling quality gets reduced.

"I think we outbat the opposition and play spin really well on flat wickets. Our bowlers also bowl better than theirs on such pitches. However, when the pitches begin to turn, our batting becomes ordinary and the gap in the quality of bowling is reduced. So this is a problem they need to address," the 46-year-old said.
