‘There's no rocket science, a lot of teams are doing it now’ - Chris Silverwood reveals reason behind coded signals to the captain in the Bangladesh game

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh fought tooth and nail in the Asia Cup 2022 Group B fixture for a spot in the super four stages and the game had a lot of drama. Even before the game, Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka and Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud exchanged a war of words about ‘easier opponent’ in the pre match conference and it increased the intensity of the game. The energy was visible in the field as both teams wanted to show their class.  

During the game, Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood sent out a lot of signals to the skipper Shanaka and it was not the first time he had done it. He had reaped a lot of success with Eoin Morgan through the same tactics and he recently revealed the reasons behind it.

Chris Silverwood mentioned that it was just a suggestion for the skipper about the matchups and denied any rocket science behind the signals. He about its’s benefits being used by a number of teams and felt that it wasn’t about dictating what the captain should do.  

“There's no rocket science. They are just suggestion for the captain at what would be a good match at a particular point for a batsman when he is on strike. There's a lot of teams doing it now, it's just as simple as it is, really. It's just giving suggestions that the captain can use, it's not telling him how to captain. It's just the suggestion from the side,” Silverwood was quoted as saying by Hindustan times. 

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka scampered through to victory with a stunning run chase on the back of Kusal Mendis (60), Dasun Shanaka (45) ‘s big efforts with the bat. However, the contributions from Chamika Karunaratne (16*) and Asitha Fernando (10*) proved to be the turning point as the debutant took the side home by just 2 wickets.
