Pakistan's left-arm fast bowling sensation Shaheen Afridi has made his return to the national team as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selectors named their 15-member squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup on Thursday. Meanwhile, former Pakistani skipper Shahid Afridi has made a remarkable revelation, stating the 22-year-old is paying for the rehabilitation out of his own pocket without any assistance from the PCB.
Shaheen Afridi was ruled out of the recently concluded Asia Cup in the UAE owing to a nagging knee ligament injury sustained in the Test series against Sri Lanka. Although there is still uncertainty about his participation in the T20 World Cup, he has shown encouraging signs during his rehabilitation in the UK. But former Pakistani skipper and Shaheen's namesake, Shahid Afridi, has made a sensational revelation, accusing the PCB of not bearing the cost of the youngster's rehabilitation.
"Shaheen Afridi has gone on his own to England. He has even paid for his own ticket. He is staying in England on his own money. I arranged a doctor for him, and then he contacted the doctor when he landed there. The PCB hasn't done anything, From the coordination to his accommodation, he is doing everything on his own. Zakir Khan (PCB's director of international cricket) spoke to him just once or twice," Afridi said in a discussion on Samaa TV.
Meanwhile, the youngster will be playing no part in the upcoming white-ball series against England and the tri-series in New Zealand as the management is hoping to provide him adequate rest before the ICC mega event. Pakistani chief selector Mohammad Wasim had said that Shaheen's recovery is being monitored by the team ahead of the T20 World Cup.
"We are assessing Shaheen's injury and hope that he will be fit," Wasim said in a press conference in Lahore. Notably, the Men in Green will kick off their T20 WC campaign with a blockbuster clash against arch-rivals India in Melbourne on October 23.
