New Zealand's star batter and Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson is poised to make his much-awaited debut in the ICC World Cup 2023. His absence in the team's initial fixtures against England and the Netherlands had left fans wondering as he had been recuperating from a significant knee injury. His inclusion in the 15-man squad had raised eyebrows but it seems the Kiwi skipper is now primed to grace the pitch.
Black Caps coach, Gary Stead, spoke with optimism about Williamson's progress and the caution that accompanies his return. Stead emphasized the rigorous demands of the game, stressing the importance of Kane's ability to run between the wickets and field consistently over a full 50-over match. He acknowledged that while everything appears positive for the right-handed batter's return in the upcoming clash against Bangladesh in Chennai, a watchful approach is paramount.
“At this stage, all things are looking good for Kane's return in this game, but we still say that with an air of caution. He's been progressing very very well. it's not about his injury so much, it's his ability to run between the wickets and field and to consistently do that over a 50-over game,” Stead elucidated as quoted by stuff.co.nz.

Kane Williamson and Tim Southee are set for a comeback
Kane Williamson's return to the side carries immense significance, as he was the Player of the Tournament in the 2019 World Cup held in England. New Zealand came agonizingly close to lifting the trophy that year, losing to the hosts in a dramatic final that culminated in a Super Over. The skipper's on-field leadership and impeccable batting skills were pivotal, and his comeback could further reignite New Zealand's campaign in this edition.
Adding to New Zealand's positive news, Test captain Tim Southee is also set to be back in contention for selection. Southee had missed the initial two games while recovering from a broken and dislocated thumb, sustained during the last game of the ODI series in England last month. His return will bolster the Kiwi bowling attack and provide further depth to their campaign.
