Thirteen-year-old boy electrocuted while playing cricket in Delhi, mother accuses power department of negligence

In a rather unfortunate incident, a 13-year-old boy in Delhi's Ranhola region passed away while playing cricket on Saturday, August 10. Notably, the young boy got electrocuted through an iron pole which was carrying electricity while playing in Kotla Vihar Phase-2.

Post the incident, as per the police officials, they received a call around daytime with the unfortunate information of the death of a boy due to electrocution. In an immediate action taken by the police, the boy was rushed to a DDU hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Currently, an investigation is underway as police have registered an FIR (First information report) in the case.

“We got a PCR call on Saturday (August 10, 2024) at 1.27 p.m. at the Ranhola Police Station regarding the death of a boy due to electrocution,” said Jimmy Chiram, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer Delhi).

“The team got to know that the boy, who was playing cricket in Kotla Vihar Phase-2, got electrocuted when he came in contact with an iron pole carrying electricity to a gaushala. He was immediately taken to DDU Hospital by PCR van where he was declared brought dead,” said the DCP. Police said that an FIR under Section 106 (1) of the BNS has been registered and an investigation has been taken up,” DCP Chiram concluded.

Apart from the police, a video of an eyewitness named, Keshav, surfaced where he was seen how he saw the unfortunate incident and how the boy remained electrocuted with the pole for nearly 15 minutes. Moreover, he also revealed that once he himself suffered electric shocks through the same connection. As a result, in a moment of rage, he chose to cut out the wires using a tool.

Meanwhile, the mother of the victim, Anita Devi, demanded stringent action against the cowshed owners and the electricity department accusing them of negligence as the wire that caused the electrocution was left unattended. Furthermore, she also revealed that the incident happened when the boy tried to pick up the ball near the pole of the ground where a lot of children play. Hence this mishap could have taken place for any other kid as well. Besides, she also lamented that nobody came to the rescue of her son in time.

“My son, who was a student of class seven of a government school, went to play cricket with his friends on Saturday. He went near the gaushala to pick the ball. He got an electric shock from a pole carrying electric wire to a cowshed,” the victim's mother said.

“Many small children go to the ground to play cricket, and this can happen to anyone. When my son was dying, no one came forward to rescue him. My elder son was shouting there to save his life, but not even a single person asked the gaushala members to turn the power off,” she added.
