'This man has emerged from the shadows of that banyan tree' - Navjot Sidhu predicts Shubman Gill to be next big thing
Navjot Singh Sidhu picks Shubman Gill as the player to take over Indian cricket after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retire.
The Indian team has given remarkable performances in the first two matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 and has made it to the semi-finals. What will make the Indian fans happy is that the top three have performed well so far and have finally found some form.
There were a lot of questions surrounding the form of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but the two matches they have played has featured crucial performances including centuries from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. Rohit has also given some quick starts with the bat.
However, there is still an unanswered question as to who is going to take on the mantle in international cricket after the retirement of both the legends since they are in the last phase of their careers. Former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu shared his views on who the perfect batter to take over Indian cricket is after these two stalwarts fade away.
“Look, see, nothing grows under a banyan tree and the banyan tree of Indian cricket is basically Rohit Sharma and with him, Virat Kohli. But when you look at Shubman Gill, those two straight drives, even the blistering cover drive, this is like a blitzkrieg where the opposition is taken aback, you know, it’s awe-inspiring," Navjot said on JioHotstar.

“This man has emerged from the shadows of that banyan tree and has come of age. It’s tough to say that. You rate ability in men by what they finish, not by what they attempt. When you actually take your side through after scoring a hundred and don’t throw your wicket, that responsibility is making you better," he added.
Speaking of Shubman Gill, he is currently the highest run-scorer for India in the Champions Trophy with 147 runs in the two matches he has played. He scored an unbeaten century against Bangladesh and a good-looking 46 against Pakistan before getting bowled out by a jaffa from Abrar Ahmed.
