One of India’s most young talents, Tilak Varma has quickly risen to the ranks in a short period. From dreaming of taking cricket as a profession in Hyderabad, he has gone on to become a key player for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Born on November 8, 2002, in Hyderabad, Tilak comes from a humble background. His father, Namboori Nagaraju, is an electrician, while his mother, Gayatri Devi, is a homemaker. Despite financial troubles, Tilak’s passion for cricket was firm. His journey began when coach Salim Bayash spotted him playing tennis ball cricket at the age of 11, and led him to join the Legala Cricket Academy, under his watchful eyes. His hard work led him to make his Ranji Trophy debut for Hyderabad, in 2018.

Tilak’s career saw a meteoric rise in 2022, when he was bought by the five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians (MI). His brilliant performances in the tournament earned him a selection in the Indian national team. In August 2023, he made his T20I debut against the West Indies and was later part of the Indian squad that won the 2023 Asia Cup. He was also part of India's historic gold medal-winning team at the 19th Asian Games, held in Hangzhou city of China.

The youngster who joined MI in 2022 has seen a significant boost in his bank balance since then. In the IPL 2022 mega auction, he was acquired for a whopping INR 1.70 crore. For the next three seasons, Tilak Varma was retained by the franchise at the same price. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction, the Mumbai-based franchise once again showed their confidence in the batter, making him their fifth retained player for INR 8 crore.

The 22-year-old may not have an extensive automobile collection yet, but he does own some luxury cars. Currently, his garage consists of a Mercedes Benz S-Class and a BMW 7 Series. Tilak Varma owns a multistoried house located in Chandrayan Gutta, which is situated in the old city of Hyderabad. Besides, he has also hosted many of his MI teammates for dinner at his much-cherished residence.
