Australia are firing all cylinders in their Super 12 campaign of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 after the massive defeat they endured at the hands of New Zealand in their first fixture. The Aussies are getting stronger with every match in all departments of the game and that has reflected on the pitch.
However, one of the all-rounders of the squad, Tim David has not hit the ground running in the marquee tournament. Despite his underwhelming performances, skipper Aaron finch has backed him to continue featuring in the playing XI ahead of star all-rounder Steve Smith. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer too has backed Tim David’s inclusion in the squad as he believes that the all-rounder can add ‘threat’ down the order.
“Tim David plays in a different position, he plays the role of a finisher and whenever he’s got the opportunity, he’s come with massive hype, Ricky Ponting deemed him that he can help the side win the World Cup. He has reflected well with his performances in the leagues around the world,” said Jaffer on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' show on CricTracker.
"When he came to India, he played well. A match or two, you can expect him to fall but to expect that he will perform right from the very first moment is something too much to expect from a guy. But he is a quality player. We’ve seen it in the IPL, when he got the chance for Mumbai Indians, he won one-two matches single-handedly. So definitely he has quality and I think Australia will persist and they should indeed because when you get comfortable and win one-two matches for the side, your morale upticks. He has that game and the threat coming in the no.6, no.7 position. So, I’m sure Australia will back him throughout this tournament,” added Jaffer.
Australia close to cementing their semi-final berth
Australia will need to win their remaining fixtures in the group stages and obtain a massive win to be on the safer side considering they have a negative net run rate. But the hosts and defending champions are well on course to make it to the last four of the competition.
