Star English batter Jason Roy has had his moments over the span of his career. After winning the ODI World Cup with England in 2019, the 32-year-old made his Test debut. However, his much anticipated red-ball debut for England did not fare very well.

Roy averaged just 18.7 runs across five Tests against Ireland and Australia. Following his subpar performances in Test cricket, Roy was then dropped for the final Ashes Test at the Oval.

Recently, Roy came forward to reflect on his Test career with the national team. The 32-year-old opined that his time was extremely tough and that being dropped from the Ashes squad came as a rude awakening.

"It was very tough; I was chucked in at the deep end of an Ashes. It was a rude awakening, to be honest. To get dropped for the final Ashes Test, at my home ground, The Oval, and never see a Test cap again was obviously very disappointing," Jason Roy told BBC Test Match Special's IPL podcast.

With the Ashes 2023 series right around the corner, Ben Stokes-led England would look to field their best possible lineup against Australia. With an attacking brand of ‘bazball’ cricket, Roy’s addition to the side originally came as a way of executing that aggressive style of play.

Furthermore, Roy reflected on whether his Test debut for England came a bit too early. "It definitely made me think my time in Test cricket came a bit too soon, Unfortunately, the way my schedule works out and is set up, especially over the next couple of years, red ball is few and far between. There is barely any," Roy said.

"It is very tough. I've not said no to it, but for me to be able to push myself into the side again would be extremely difficult considering how well they are playing and the brand they are playing and the set-up they have at the moment," he concluded.
