Tom Curran, the 27-year-old England cricketer, has been struggling with injuries for quite some time now. He recently announced his decision to take a step back from the longer format of the game to focus more on white-ball cricket. With multiple injuries over the years, the decision to step back from red-ball cricket might help Curran streamline his career.
The oldest of the Curran brothers, Tom, has represented a plethora of teams in the shortest format of the game. He has donned the jerseys of teams like Surrey in the Vitality Blast, and has also played for the Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
Having such a packed schedule while playing in every format of the game is simply unfeasible for Curran. The packed schedule is one of the major reasons that he is taking a temporary step back from red-ball cricket.
This isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly: Tom Curran
Currently, Tom Curran is representing the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 and will be playing in the Pakistan Super League as soon as next month. The Englishman will solely be focusing on white-ball cricket for the time being.
"The last couple of years have not been easy for me; I have had a lot of time, and this isn't a decision that I've taken lightly. Some choices in life I don’t think you will ever be 100 percent sure about, and this is definitely one of them. But where I find myself at this exact moment, I feel like it is the right decision for my body and for my mental health."
"I'm definitely not ruling out playing red-ball cricket again in the future, and I feel like I have unfinished business in this format for both Surrey and England," Tom said, as quoted by The Cricketer.
Surrey's director of cricket, Alec Stewart, came out to support Curran’s decision to take this indefinite break from red-ball cricket, as he too looks forward to seeing Tom Curran in action for the T20 season.
