Travis Head's Brisbane arrival delayed due to positive COVID-19 test
The dynamic player, who showcased his prowess in the first Test with a match-winning century in Adelaide, has tested positive for the virus.
In a recent turn of events leading up to the highly anticipated Brisbane Test, Australian cricketer Travis Head finds himself under the looming shadow of COVID-19 concerns. The dynamic player, who showcased his prowess in the first Test with a match-winning century in Adelaide, has tested positive for the virus.
The ill feeling after the Adelaide Test prompted the COVID test, and Cricket Australia has confirmed that Head's arrival in Brisbane will be delayed until Tuesday morning, allowing him more time to recover. The team's crucial training session at the Gabba is scheduled for 5 pm on Tuesday, adding an element of uncertainty to Head's participation in the upcoming day/night Test.
As the team regroups in Brisbane to prepare for the next encounter, Head remains isolated at home, hoping for a negative test result before joining the squad.
If, however, Head continues to test positive, he may still have the opportunity to participate under strict isolation protocols, akin to fellow squad member Matt Renshaw's experience during last year's SCG Test against South Africa. Renshaw, although COVID-positive, played the game while adhering to isolation measures, both on and off the field.
The precedent for such protocols was set during the Commonwealth Games women's cricket final in Birmingham in August 2022 when Australian all-rounder Tahlia McGrath played despite testing positive beforehand. The approach garnered praise for its meticulous execution, ensuring the safety of all team members.
As Head grapples with his illness, Usman Khawaja, who recently received a clean chit to play at the Gabba after a heavy blow in Adelaide, adds a positive note to the Australian camp.
“Usman Khawaja has been cleared to play the second Test match against the West Indies in Brisbane. Khawaja was assessed again today and has no symptoms of delayed concussion. He will train at the Gabba tomorrow,” a team spokesperson said as quoted by TheAge.com.au

Khawaja, seizing the moment to give back, has put his "All Lives Matter" shoes up for auction, with proceeds designated for UNICEF's Children of Gaza appeal. The cricketer took to Instagram to announce the initiative, emphasising the urgency of support for the cause.
