Australia yet again showcased an outstanding performance as they decimated Zimbabwe in the second One Day International at the Tony Ireland Stadium, Townsville on Wednesday, August 31 by eight wickets and by the virtue of this victory, they have sealed the three-match series 2-0. Just like the opening game, the Zimbabweans were totally clueless with both bat and ball as the Aussies gave them no chance of even putting up a challenge.
First it was star pacer Mitchell Starc who kept the visitors guessing with his spell and then Steven Smith came to the rescue with the bat and added the finishing touches with perfection as Zimbabwe’s wait to register an ODI series victory on Australian soil continues.
Australia make light work of Zimbabwe
Batting first the Zimbabweans were never really in the game as quick wickets kept derailing their momentum. Innocent Kaia once again looked out of touch and his opening partner Tadiwanashe Marumane who was impressive in the last game could only manage to score four runs on this occasion. None of the batters could contribute much either individually or collectively.
Only middle-order batter Sean Williams chipped in with 29 whereas Sikandar Raza once again disappointed in the ongoing series as he walked back to the pavilion with 17 runs against his name as the visitors were bowled out for just 96 in the 28th over.
Mitchell Starc (3/24) and Adam Zampa (3/21) were the picks of the bowlers for the hosts while Cameron Green chipped in with two wickets. Josh Hazlewood and Ashton Agar took a wicket each.
In reply, the Zimbabweans dismissed the explosive opener David Warner and skipper Aaron Finch early, but Steven Smith successfully anchored the chase. He remained unbeaten on 47 runs off 41 deliveries and was involved in an unbeaten 84-run stand with wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey (26) as the five-time world champions got over the line in just the 15th over. The third and final ODI will be played at the same venue on Saturday, September 3.
