South Africa’s David Teeger has been relieved from his role as the captain of the under-19 side after there were concerns for his safety following the comments he made in support of Israeli soldiers in the ongoing conflict with Palestine. With the U19 World Cup less than a week away, Teeger’s removal as the skipper could be a big cause of concern for the side.
CSA (Cricket South Africa) is reportedly preparing for protests in the tournament as some major heat is expected after Teeger’s comments. Releasing a statement, CSA revealed that Teeger’s removal as skipper was taken in the best interest of the side and the board.
It is worth noting that South Africa will kick off their World Cup campaign on Friday, January 19, taking on the West Indies, which will be followed by clashes with England and Scotland.
"As is the case with all such events, CSA has been receiving regular security and risk updates regarding the World Cup. We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament; we have also been advised that they are likely to focus on the position of the SA Under-19 captain, David Teeger, and that there is a risk that they could result in conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protestors,” CSA said in a statement.
Teeger’s selection in the side has already caused quite the uproar in the country after a group of pro-Palestinian supporters gathered outside the Newlands during the New Year’s Test when India took on South Africa recently.
"CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators. In all the circumstances, CSA has decided that David should be relieved of the captaincy for the tournament,” the CSA statement further read.
