Former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower backed BCCI’s idea to appoint Gautam Gambhir as the next head coach of the Indian team. He has previously worked with the southpaw for two years in Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and understands the value Gambhir brings to the table.
Flower highlighted Gambhir’s love for Indian cricket and added that he is very decisive and a screwed tactician. He believes that BCCI has made the right decision and expects Gambhir to succeed as the head coach of the national team.
“Well, the first thing he’s got to do is just give up his legends cricket at the moment. He’s quite a man, Gautam Gambhir, I really enjoyed working with him. He’s got strong opinions, he’s got strong clear views on the game,” Flower was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

“He’s very decisive, he’s a very proud Indian, he loves Indian cricket and his position, representing Indian cricket. I think it’s a good appointment and I think he’s going to be successful,” the 56-year-old added.
Meanwhile, as per reports, Abhishek Nayar is the favourite to assist Gambhir in the Indian team. Either Ryan ten Doeschate or Jonty Rhodes is likely to be named the fielding coach but a lot can change in the upcoming few days.
BCCI will release an invitation soon and everything is likely to be finalized within the next 10 days. As for the bowling coach role, Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji are the favourites at the moment. Gambhir wanted Vinay Kumar but the BCCI officials want someone with more international experience.

Meanwhile, Gambhir does not have enough experience in coaching. He has mentored Lucknow and Kolkata Knight Riders previously but it needs to be seen how good he does in Test cricket, especially in Australia and England.
However, there is a belief that the former cricketer will succeed in the role, given how successful he was as a player.
