'Very little confidence in defence' - Aakash Chopra names reason behind David Warner's Test struggles in India

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has provided insights on the impact David Warner could have against India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series. Chopra also explained why the 36-year-old struggles when playing Tests on Indian soil.

Warner has been in good form in Test cricket and is coming after scoring a double century against South Africa at home recently. However, Chopra discussed the weaknesses in Warner’s game and suggested that lack of footwork and throwing his hands at the ball is the reason behind his struggles on Indian pitches.

"When he comes to India and plays Test cricket, something happens, and he can't score many runs. The reason behind this is that he throws his hands at the ball with minimal footwork; his front foot doesn't come out much," Chopra said while hosting JioCinema’s new daily sports show, Aakashvani.

"Warner's strengths are the cut shot and the pull shot, but we don't get to play these shots very often in India because there isn't much room to play cut shots, and even if you do, there's no bounce, and if you get the bounce, there's no pace in that ball," he added.

Australia, who are looking set to make it to the final of the World Test Championship, will be hoping for a good show against India and Warner's performances will be crucial if they have to win the upcoming series. Chopra stated that Warner has very little faith in his defence and compared his batting technique to that of Ricky Ponting. 

"He [Warner] has very little confidence in his defence. He goes to the ball with very hard hands, just like Ricky Ponting used to go, and trust me, the one who goes with the hard hands won't be able to do anything. This is the Indian frontier that he has yet to conquer, so if he is to do so, he must change his technique, style of play, and self-defence beliefs," Chopra said.

India will take on the Aussies on February 9 in Nagpur and it surely will be a huge task for Australia to beat India at home, as they have been unable to win a series here since 2004-05.
