Punjab and Mumbai faced off in a Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT 2024) game on Saturday, December 28, at the ADSA Railways Cricket Ground, in Ahmedabad. Pacer Arshdeep Singh was at his lethal best as the pacer picked a five-wicket haul to send almost half of the Mumbai team back to the dressing room. Thanks to his fiery bowling display, Mumbai found themselves reeling at 112/7 inside 23 overs.

Arshdeep started by dismissing the Mumbai openers, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ayush Mhatre by trapping them in front of the stumps (LBW dismissal). He later cleaned up Mumbai skipper, Shreyas Iyer and made star India batter, Suryakumar Yadav walks out for a duck. The big hitter, Shivam Dube too fell prey to his lethal attack and scored just 17 of 25 balls.

At the end of 34 overs of the Mumbai innings, the left-arm pacer had bowled seven overs which included a maiden. He plucked five wickets and gave away just 29 runs at an economy rate of just 4.10. It is worth noting that, Punjab captain, Abhishek Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first and made use of the conditions very well.

Shardul Thakur, Atharva Ankolekar save Mumbai's from further blushes

Despite Arshdeep’s efforts, Mumbai’s rocky start was compensated by the Atharva Ankolekar and Shardul Thakur’s partnership. At the end of the 34th over, the duo remained unbeaten on 51 and 35 respectively and had already notched up a 73-run stand for the eighth wicket. Mumbai’s scorecard read 185/7 in 34 overs whereas at one stage they were 112/7.

Another notable contribution to Mumbai came at the end of Suryansh Shedge. The all-rounder scored 43 runs in 44 balls laced with four boundaries and three maximums. For Punjab, other than Arshdeep, Sanveer Singh and Raghu Sharma picked one wicket each.
