India's star cricketer Virat Kohli didn't have a great time with the bat during recently-concluded five-match tour of Australia. The legendary batter failed to replicate his heroics from previous tours Down Under. India lost the series by a 1-3 margin as Australia reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years.

During the tour, Kohli scored 190 runs from nine innings at a dismal average of 23.75. He was found wanting against deliveries bowled outside the off-stump. The 36-year-old played at deliveries he could have left alone and was caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey or by the slip fielders every time.

After the disastrous outing with the bat, some fans have started worrying about Kohli's future in the longest format. However, Ian Chappell feels that the Delhi batter still has a lot to offer, especially in the impending England tour, which begins in June. The former Australian captain, however, suggested that Kohli should ditch his "senseless antics" referring to his shoulder bump to Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

"Kohli's experience in the UK would be invaluable, and of the two problematic players he's the most likely to be resuscitated. However, his consistency needs to improve in addition to dispensing valuable advice to younger players. He also has to stop his senseless antics like shouldering Sam Konstas in the MCG Test. If Kohli does decide to retire from Test cricket, the loss of both him and Rohit would leave a huge gap in the line-up for a tough tour," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

Chappell believes that Rohit Sharma, who had a terrible outing with the bat in Australia, is in deeper trouble. The cricketer-turned-expert noted that the Indian Test and ODI skipper has not been at his technical best in recent times.

"For India the two big question marks are leading batters, and the selectors have tough decisions to make regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The soon-to-be-38-year-old Rohit, facing a crammed five-Test series against England in a few months, is a doubtful quantity. Although India are extremely reluctant to part with star players, lately Rohit has struggled technically and his absence would provide uncertainty over the opening position and the captaincy," Chappell explained.

KL Rahul, a decent opening alternative: Chappell

Chappell also shared his views regarding India's next Test captain. He said that KL Rahul, who has led India in three Tests, could be a good pick. The Karnataka batter lost his vice-captaincy role in the Test team to Jasprit Bumrah.

"KL Rahul is a decent opening alternative but the captaincy provides a bigger headache whenever Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable. Bumrah showed in Australia he's an outstanding bowler and a decent skipper, but he needs support in both categories if India are to remain a force," Chappell concluded.
