Team India are all set to face Australia in the World Test Championship Final at the Oval, on June 7. They will be eyeing a long-awaited ICC triumph, but standing in their way are a strong Australian squad. India did made life difficult for Australia during the Test series at home, but their performance in ICC finals hasn't been all that impressive. Additionally, India have lost some of its important players, like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah, to injuries.
Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane is making a comeback to the Test side, while skipper, Rohit Sharma is still struggling to find his mojo with the bat. When it comes to other star players, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Cheteshwar Pujara will be crucial for India in the summit match. After experiencing a prolonged lean period during 2019 and 2022, Virat Kohli has looked in his sublime touch of late.
In the same vein, the former Australian cricketer, Greg Chappell, believes that star Indian batter, Virat Kohli will score runs for his team this time through because the game will be played at the Oval in London and the conditions will suit him. Moreover, he also opined that the Australian bowlers may not be able to use the conditions in the their favour unlike the English bowlers Besides, Chappell also pointed out that Kohli relishes challenges and will not back down from going toe-to-toe with Aussies given his record in Australia as well.
“Virat Kohli was asked a lot of questions in England in 2014 and 2021 by Anderson, Broad and the rest of the English bowlers. They bowled some excellent lines and lengths to him in conditions that suited them. They knew he is the best and lifted themselves up when bowling to him. To think or say that the Australians will be able to do the same from ball one is not correct," Chappell said during Backstage with Boria show.
"The English know their own conditions better than anyone else in the world. And Virat loves to bat against the Australians. We have seen that in Australia. His record is evidence how good he is. He loves a contest and is never one to back off from one,” Chappell said on Backstage with Boria show," he continued.
Virat Kohli can make a significant difference during match: Chappell
The legendary Australian further went on to say that the Oval is probably going to have strong bounce, which will be to Virat Kohli's advantage. He pointed out that if the weather remained dry, it would result in a wicket that was very similar to those found in Australia. He praised Virat Kohli as a highly skilled player capable of making a significant difference to the outcome of the match.
“The Oval from all of my experience is going to have bounce and it will suit Virat. You have said to me that the weather has stayed dry so far. If the weather continues to stay dry the Oval is as close to an Australian wicket in England as you will ever get. And that will suit Virat. He is a very good player and someone who can make a telling difference," Chappell concluded.
Virat Kohli's form and performance will be widely watched as the Indian side prepares for the ultimate battle against Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final. Kohli has often shown through his outstanding abilities and competitive enthusiasm that he excels in under demanding circumstances.
