Vinod Sehwag, brother of former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, was arrested by Chandigarh Police on Thursday in connection with a cheque bounce case. His detention follows a local court's decision in 2023 to announce him and two others as assigned offenders for multiple times failing to appear in proceedings relevant to dishonored cheques issued to the proprietor of Shree Naina Plastics, Krishan Mohan Khanna.

According to advocate Vikas Sagar, Xalta Food and Beverages, who represents the complainant, had acquired materials worth ₹7 crore from Shree Naina Plastics in 2018. As payment, the company issued seven different cheques of ₹1 crore each. Nevertheless, all cheques bounced due to faulty funds. Regardless of repeated follow-ups, the company was unsuccessful in clearing its dues within the stipulated period. Consequently, Khanna sent a legal notice demanding payment within 15 days, but no action was taken.

As an outcome of this, Khanna filed a formal complaint against Xalta Food and Beverages and its three directors—Vinod Sehwag, Sudhir Malhotra and Vishnu Mittal. The lower court paged all three as accused last year. However, Vinod Sehwag debated this order in the sessions court, arguing that he was neither a director nor an employee of the company and should not have been named in the case.

During his bail hearing, Sehwag's lawyer stated that his client was not consciously evading court proceedings but was using his legal rights. He also informed the court that Sehwag had requested the Supreme Court regarding multiple cheque bounce cases filed against him. Sehwag expressed his willingness to appear before the court for all scheduled hearings and requested regular bail, emphasizing that the other accused had already secured bail.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 10.
