Wankhede Stadium scripts Guinness World Record while marking 50th anniversary
The first-ever international match at the venue was played from January 23 to January 29, 2025.
The iconic Wankhede Stadium is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Days after their 50-year celebration, the majestic venue located on the Mumbai coastline entered the Guinness Book of World Records under the category of the "Largest Sentence Written Using Cricket Balls."
They used a whopping total of 14,505 red and white leather balls to form a short sentence on the outfield of the ground. The sentence understandably read, "FIFTY YEARS OF WANKHEDE STADIUM". The incredible effort could be achieved due to the diligent officials of the venue.

In a bid to inspire the future generation of cricketers, the cricket balls used to form the sentence will be donated to schools, clubs, and NGOs across the city.
The record was aptly made on the day when the first international match at the Wankhede commenced. India and the West Indies played a Test match spanning between January 23 and January 29, 1975. The Mumbai Cricket Association devoted the achievement to the late former Indian skipper, Eknath Solkar, who scored a ton during that game, in addition to many other departed Mumbai cricketers.
Up until now, India have played 54 matches across formats at the Wankhede and emerged victorious in 28 of them.

Several notable cricketing personalities such as Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer attended the event. During the programme, Rohit vowed to lay his hands on the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy and bring the coveted silverware back home. For the unversed, the Indian side had a special celebration at the Wankhede after they returned from the Americas to celebrate their T20 World Cup victory.
