Young sensation Richa Ghosh will be seen playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). After an intense bidding war between RCB and Mumbai Indians (MI), Richa was bought for a whopping INR 1.9 crore by the former. Soon after that, the 19-year-old revealed her dream of buying a flat in Kolkata for her parents to settle down.
The Siliguri-born cricketer also talked about her dream of leading India and winning a major tournament in the future. Talking about her parents, Richa mentioned that they struggled in plenty in life and after the auction, she wants them to enjoy their life.
“All my parents wanted me to achieve was to play for India. I want to captain my team and win a major trophy for India. I want to buy a flat in Kolkata. I want my mother and father to settle down there. I want them to enjoy their life now. They have struggled a lot in their life, and they have worked hard a lot for me. Even now, my father does umpire. After the auction, I hope he doesn’t have to work so hard,” Richa was quoted by News18.
Notably, just a day prior to the WPL auction, Richa played a sensational cameo of 31 off 20 balls, which helped India win a historic match against Pakistan in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. Overall, Richa has played 31 matches in the shortest format of the game, scoring 458 runs at a strike rate of 135.50.
Smriti Mandhana became the costliest buy in WPL auction
Meanwhile, Richa’s teammate Smriti Mandhana became the costliest player in the WPL auction as RCB went all-out for the opener, buying her for INR 3.40 crore. Further, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur was rather surprisingly bought for INR 1.80 crore - nearly half of Mandhana’s price. She will be playing for Mumbai in the first edition of the competition.
On the other hand, England international Nat Sciver-Burnt and Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner were the joint-most expensive overseas players (INR 3.2 crore) in the auction. Sciver will be seen playing for Mumbai Indians while Gardner will represent the UP Warriorz.
