Vinod Kambli: The rise and fall of an Indian cricket star
Vinod Kambli first came to notice as a youngster when he and the great Sachin Tendulkar combined for a world-record 664 runs in a school match in 1988. Tendulkar was sixteen at the time, and Kambli was seventeen.
Kambli debuted in international cricket three years later, in 1991, when he played for India in one-day internationals. He also made his Test debut in 1993, announcing his arrival in his third and fourth Test matches against England with back-to-back double hundreds. Kambli, though, was unable to live up to the initial hopes.
Overall, Kambli played 104 ODIs and only 17 Tests for India. Two centuries and fourteen fifties let him achieve 2477 runs in ODIs. He amassed over a thousand runs in Test cricket, with four centuries and three half-centuries.
