Kusal Mendis played a breathtaking innings of 122 off 77 balls smashing 14 fours and six gigantic sixes in his innings.
Kusal Mendis continued his sensational form in the Match 08 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 vs Pakistan on Tuesday, October 10 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. The wicketkeeper-batter continued from where he left off in the opening fixture vs South Africa and played a blistering knock of 122 off 77 balls smashing 14 fours and six gigantic sixes in his innings.
Mendis unleashed his wrath on the Pakistan pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali and Harid Rauf as he raced to his century in just 65 balls. Pakistan seamers went into hiding seeing Mendis’ onslaught as he mercilessly thrashed them all over the park.
Before getting dismissed, he took on Hasan Ali in the 29th over putting his wide array of strokes on display. Mendis first smacked the Pakistan seamer for a maximum over long on and then off the very next delivery, he clobbered him over deep extra cover and got the same result. Seeing Mendis’ breathtaking shots even Hasan Ali was left dumbfounded which was evident through his reaction after being hit for consecutive sixes.

However, off the very next ball, in an attempt to complete a hat-trick of sixes, the Sri Lankan batter went for his third consecutive maximum but ended up finding Imam-ul-Haq at deep mid-wicket. After the catch was taken, several photos of the boundary line being pushed back from its original position went viral all over social media as fans claimed that Imam would’ve landed on the boundary rope if it had been in its original place. Notably, Imam had earlier dropped Mendis on 18 at point in the seventh over of the innings bowled by Shaheen Afridi.

Mendis becomes the highest run scorer in World Cup 2023
Meanwhile, Mendis etched his name in the record books as he registered the fastest-ever hundred (65 balls) by a Sri Lankan batter in World Cup history. He also became the highest run-scorer in World Cup 2023 so far with 198 runs to his name from two innings at an average of 99 and a sensational strike rate of 166.38 with one fifty and one hundred.
